Reconstruction "Danse Macabre" by Mary wigman

A project by Theater Osnabrück

Artistic director of reconstruction:  Henrietta Horn

World Premiere: 11.2.2017

Theater Osnabrück

Mary Wigman (1886-1973), one of the most famous and influential icons of 20th century modern dance in Germany, created a dance of death in 1917 which she published with music by Camille Saint-Saëns in Dresden in 1921. Four years later she created her second dance of death in Dresden for her dance group. Painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was the “silent partner” in the process, “always present and inspiring”; drawing, sketching drafts which later became the oil painting Dance of Death and many other paintings about Wigman. Later Dance of Death II premiered in Königsberg in 1926.

Patricia Stöckemann, head dramaturg at Theater Osnabrück and Wigman-expert, now, after a successful reconstruction of Wigman’s LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS in 2013, brings the Dance Company Theater Osnabrück with both Dances of Death - two small-scale projects by Wigman - back on stage. This very special reconstruction project is subsidized by Tanzfonds Erbe.

Henrietta Horn (Artistic Director) and her team - Susan Barnett, Katherine Sehnert and Christine Caradec - were asked to realize the reconstruction. Patricia Stöckemann, Hedwig Müller and the dance archives in Cologne, Berlin and Leipzig provide further expert assistance for the project.
